Makanda Quad. Loc. 12 (Carboniferous of the United States)

Where: Union County, Illinois (37.7° N, 89.2° W: paleocoordinates 12.8° S, 31.3° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Wayside Member (Caseyville Formation), Carboniferous (358.9 - 298.9 Ma)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: delta plain; sandstone

• The distribution trends for plant fossils in the Chester Series of the Illinois Basin are interpreted as suggesting that successive, narrow deltaic lobes were built into the Illinois Basin during the Chesterian, and that only along these most active sites of depostion were land-plant habitats available. The restriction of plant fossils to the top of the clastic-dominated formations can be explained if the lower part of these units is interpreted as progradational, while only the uppermost part represents depostion on a delta platform.

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: mold/impression, original carbon

Collection methods: surface (in situ),
