When: Zelten Formation (Jabal Zelten Group), Thanetian (59.2 - 56.0 Ma)

• Thanetian age is based on presence of forams Planorotalites compressa, Subbotina velasconensis, Subbotina triloculinoides and Morozovella acuta as well as the algae Distichoplax biserialis

Environment/lithology: sand shoal; grainstone

• Shoal, with lagoonal influence, close to an organic buildup
• Coral and algal-bearing foraminiferal grainstone, microfacies consists of foraminifers in the form of Discocyclina sp. and Nummulites sp. with some smaller benthic foraminifers, including miliolids; foraminifera commonly preserved intact; common shredded pieces of algal material; also some encrusting corals of scleractinian type, in part appears to have formed in place; some also contain echinoderm debris and bivalve shell fragments
