Lost Burro Gap (Devonian of the United States)

Where: Inyo County, California (36.7° N, 117.5° W: paleocoordinates 18.4° S, 56.9° W)

When: Cyrtospirifer brachiopod zone, Quartz Spring Sandstone Member (Lost Burro Formation), Late/Upper Devonian (382.7 - 358.9 Ma)

• The specimens were obtained from thin- bedded cherty limestone and calcareous to dolomitic sandstone in the upper 20 feet of the Quartz Spring Sandstone Member of the Lost Burro Formation. This member constitutes the Cyrtospirifer Zone of MacAllister (1952) and a late Upper Devonian age has been indicated by studies of invertebrate fossils (Langenheim and Tischler, 1960) and conodonts (Youngquist and Heinrich, 1966) . This age can now be corroborated on the basis of the presently noted vertebrate fossils.

Environment/lithology: marine; cherty/siliceous limestone and dolomitic, calcareous sandstone

Size class: macrofossils
