Masloh quarry (Jurassic of Germany)

Where: Northrhine Westphalia, Germany (52.3° N, 8.8° E: paleocoordinates 42.9° N, 17.2° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Ornatenton Formation (Braunjura Group), Middle Callovian (164.7 - 161.2 Ma)

• Waskow et al. 2018: The vertebrate remains from the Ornatenton Formation of the Weser-Wiehengebirge derive from two closely spaced horizons in the uppermost part of the formation. The lower horizon is a condensation horizon from which the material described by Michelis et al. (1996) was collected. This horizon is 30 cm below the top of the formation, which is marked by the “Gryphaea Bed.” The Gryphaea Bed, also a condensation horizon, which largely consists of the eponymous oyster Gryphaea dilatata, is the source of the theropod material described by Rauhut et al. (2016) and the metriorhynchid skull described herein.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, argillaceous mudstone

Size class: macrofossils

Collected by Maik Sieker in 2014

Collection methods: quarrying, surface (float), surface (in situ),

• Waskow et al. 2018: The specimen was discovered by the private collector and WMNM volunteer Maik Sieker after heavy rainfall in the overgrown Masloh quarry on October 3, 2014. He informed the museum management, which organized the professional excavation and preparation of the crocodile skull.
