Gaillard Cut, Culebra Formation (Miocene to of Panama)

Where: Panama (9.1° N, 79.7° W: paleocoordinates 8.4° N, 77.5° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Culebra Formation, Aquitanian to Aquitanian (23.0 - 16.0 Ma)

• Early Miocene (late Aquitanian–early Burdigalian: dated using strontium isotopes to between 21.24 ± 0.44 and 19.12 ± 0.42 Ma; Kirby et al., 2008). These dates are consistent with the estimated ages of the underlying Cascadas Formation (20.93 ± 0.17 Ma; Bloch et al., 2016) and overlying Cucaracha Formation (18.81 ± 30 Ma; MacFadden et al., 2014).

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: prodelta; siltstone

• interpreted as representing prodeltaic sediments
• bioturbated, organic-rich siltstones with laterally discontinuous, coarse to fine sandstone beds

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the USNM
