Western De Geerfjellet (Carboniferous of Svalbard and Jan Mayen)

Where: Svalbard and Jan Mayen (78.7° N, 16.8° E: paleocoordinates 25.3° N, 6.9° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Trikolorfjellet Member (Ebbadalen Formation), Bashkirian (323.2 - 315.2 Ma)

• The investigated specimen is from the uppermost carbonate bed in the Trikolorfjellet Member, Ebbadalen Formation. The upper Trikolorfjellet Member is of middle to late Bashkirian age based on the presence of a microbiota of fusulinid, endothyrid and archadiscid foraminifers in carbonate beds immediately below and above.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: open shallow subtidal; lithified, shelly/skeletal wackestone

• "The Trikolorfjellet Member forms an up to 200 m-thick unit of interbedded gypsum and carbonates with minor siliciclastics believed to reflect deposition in sabkha and marginal marine environments." [Abundance of crinoids and brachiopods suggests open marine conditions]
• Biogenic wackestone with more grain-rich layers dominated by crinoids and other echinoderms

Size class: macrofossils
