Castro, east of Vignacastrisa (Miocene of Italy)

Where: Italy (40.0° N, 18.4° E: paleocoordinates 39.2° N, 17.6° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Pietra Leccese Formation, Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• From the "Aturia level." On the basis of strontium-isotope analyses and biostratigraphic data on calcareous nannofossils, Föllmi et al. (2015) restricted the age of the Aturia level to the early Serravallian/late Tortonian. However, Bossio et al. (2002, 2005, 2008) and Mazzei et al. (2009) argued for a late Burdigalian (or early Langhian) age for the basal Pietra Leccese Formation and Aturia level, on the basis of planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils.
