When: Breda Formation, Tortonian (11.6 - 7.2 Ma)

• Dinoflagellate cysts determined the matrix to be of late Tortonian age 8.7–8.1 Ma (Bisconti et al 2019).

Environment/lithology: marine; glauconitic, gray, blue sandstone

• The glauconitic blue-grey sandstone matrix always contains skeletal elements from one and the same species of mysticete (skull and/or mandibles and/or forearm parts and/or parts of the vertebral columns [Fig. 5]) or odontocete (skull with or without mandible, and skeletal parts).
