Tokarahi Cliff (Oligocene of New Zealand)

Also known as I412/f128

Where: South Island, New Zealand (44.9° S, 170.7° E: paleocoordinates 51.2° S, 174.9° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Kokoamu Greensand Formation (Otiake Group), Duntroonian (27.3 - 25.2 Ma)

• Kokoamu GreensandOtekaike Limestone transition. The Kokoamu Greensand is known to span two New Zealand stages, the upper Whaingaroan and the lower to middle part of the Duntroonian (Gage 1957; Ksepka et al. 2012). Foraminifera from the matrix of OU 22125 include rare small specimens of the planktonic Streptochilus pristinus, which ranges from Duntroonian to early Waitakian (Hornibrook et al. 1989). Globigerina euapertura and G. labiacrassata are present, but no speci- mens were found of the next-younger zonal species Glo- boquadrina dehiscens. OU 22125 is therefore from the Globigerina euapertura planktonic foraminiferal interval zone of Jenkins (1965). The foraminifera are consistent with a Duntroonian age, 27.325.2 Ma (correlation after Raine et al. 2012, 2015).

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marine; lithified, glauconitic, calcareous sandstone

• The matrix of OU 22125 is pale yel- low-green glauconitic bioclastic limestone to calcareous greensand, with occasional calcareous concretions

Size class: macrofossils
