Cassina, bed 14 (Triassic of Switzerland)

Where: Switzerland (45.9° N, 8.9° E: paleocoordinates 8.8° N, 20.1° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Cassina Formation, Fassanian (242.0 - 235.0 Ma)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: basinal (); lithified, carbonaceous lime mudstone

• Bottom of a basin below wave base and adjacent to a shallow-water carbonate platform from which a recurrent carbonate supply reached the basin floor, contributing to the sediment lamination. Vertebrate assemblages and the lack of stenohaline invertebrates point to an environment with limited connection to the open sea. Episodic, short-lived depositional events occur randomly and are related to sediment input from basin margins (turbidite lithofacies) and to volcanic activity (tephra lithofacies).
