Black Bear Quarry II (Miocene of the United States)

Also known as SDSM V-673

Where: Bennett County, South Dakota (43.2° N, 101.8° W: paleocoordinates 43.9° N, 97.9° W)

• coordinate based on political unit

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Rosebud Formation, Hemingfordian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• channel deposit "is approximately 60 cm thick and about seven meters wide"

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: coarse channel fill; concretionary conglomerate

• "stream channel deposit"
• "The channel base contains large pebbles up to 10 cm in diameter. Above the pebbly layer is the main fossiliferous bed. It is about 30 cm thick and is gravelly. Above it is a layer of strongly cemented concretions. Each concretion is about 20 to 30 cm long and nearly 10 cm thick. These concretions are interpreted as the result of later water table action. They contain fossils as do several centimeters of the overlying layer."

Size class: mesofossils

Collected by SDSM in 1967 - 1968; reposited in the SDSM

Collection methods: bulk, sieve,

• NISP 779

•"approximately" one ton of matrix
