Browns Creek (Eocene of Australia)

Where: Victoria, Australia (38.8° S, 143.4° E: paleocoordinates 58.2° S, 141.5° E)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Browns Creek Clay Formation, Priabonian (38.0 - 33.9 Ma)

• From Browns Creek Clay. Described as "Browns Creek Marl" so likely from upper marl/clay unit. Contains Hantkenina alabamensis compressa Parr. The combined evidence of I. recurvus and C. reticulatus assigns the lower part of the Browns Creek Clay a late Eocene age , equivalent to low either Zone NP19/20 or Subzone CP15b. A correlation with the foraminiferal zonal interval high P15 to within P16 of the tropics is possible.

• group of beds-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: deep subtidal ramp; lithified marl

• Primarily dark gray marl, but containing thin limestone beds that sometimes have scoured bases and tops, suggesting intermittent storm events. In upper part of marl unit, some calcareous beds are scoured and/or cross-bedded.

Size class: macrofossils
