Sourdough Creek 1 (Neogene of the United States)

Also known as OMNH V1222

Where: Roger Mills County, Oklahoma (35.8° N, 99.6° W: paleocoordinates 36.1° N, 97.9° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Ogallala Formation, Hemphillian (10.3 - 4.9 Ma)

• "Age-diagnostic species include ... Hypolagus vetus at locality V1222 of Hemphillian age"

•"Many of the localities yielding vertebrate fossils in west-central Oklahoma occur along the outcrop margin of the Ogallala Formation, where there seems to be extensive reworking of the Ogallala sediments. This and the paucity of age-diagnostic taxa make it difficult to assign most of the Roger Mills County localities to a land mammal age."

Environment/lithology: terrestrial; poorly lithified, brown, red sandstone and lithified, red siltstone

• "Fossils occurred in a tan to reddish tan poorly consolidated fine sand overlying a reddish, slightly indurated sand of the basal Ogallala Formation. Lower beds in the same roadcut contained more carbonate, including some thin caliche beds. A rabbit tibia protruded from the weakly cemented sand near the top of the roadcut, and additional parts of the rabbit and other small vertebrates were en- countered while collecting the rabbit tibia."

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
