WY-12 Waynesboro Quarry, Wayne Fm., Wenlock conodonts (Silurian to of the United States)

Where: Wayne County, Tennessee (35.3° N, 87.8° W: paleocoordinates 30.6° S, 55.2° W)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Lego Member (Wayne Formation), Homerian to Homerian (430.5 - 425.6 Ma)

Environment/lithology: open shallow subtidal; lithified packstone and lithified wackestone

• A mixture of skeletal packstones, less common wackestones and rare grainstones form Facies III. No significant difference in composition exists between Facies II and Facies III strata. In Facies III beds, though, skeletal grains are more badly broken and abraded than in Facies II strata. Fragments of larger grains that have been broken and abraded beyond recognition comprise the unidentified fraction. Small scale discontinuity surfaces covered with concentrations of moderately well-sorted skeletal grainstone are common. As in Facies II, most of the larger grains have been bored to some extent.

Size class: microfossils

Preservation: original phosphate

Collection methods: chemical, acetic
