STRI Loc. 290638 [field] - Patajau Norte [lower Castilletes Fm] (Miocene of Colombia)

Where: La Guajira, Colombia (11.9° N, 71.3° W: paleocoordinates 11.2° N, 68.0° W)

• coordinate based on unpublished field data

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: lower Castilletes Member (Castilletes Formation), Burdigalian (20.4 - 16.0 Ma)

• STRATIGRAPHIC RELATIONS: From the Castilletes Formation, which conformably overlies the Jimol Formation (early Miocene) and is unconformably overlain by the Ware Formation. This area and nearby collections have been previously mapped as Castilletes Formaton (late Pliocene-early Pleistocene). AGE: Burdigalian, on the basis of macrofaunal composition; direct age established by extrapolation of Sr-isotope dating by enterer. STRATIGRAPHIC POSITION: From approximately 113 m above the contact of the Jimol/Castilletes fms.

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: estuary or bay; poorly lithified, shelly/skeletal sandstone

• ENVIRONMENT: Reduced salinity; likely estuarine; 0-5 m; siliciclastic.
• SPECIFIC LITHOLOGY: Poorly consolidated, fossiliferous, sandy matrix. LITHIFICATION: Poorly-lithified, as determined in the field.

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite
