Fisher Massif (Miocene of Antarctica)

Where: Antarctica (71.6° S, 67.7° E: paleocoordinates 70.9° S, 64.9° E)

• coordinate estimated from map

When: Fisher Bench Formation (Pagodroma Group), Tortonian (11.6 - 7.2 Ma)

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; sandstone

• The hosting sediments were deposited in a marine environment without influence of ice shelf or outlet glaciers. They form a four-metre-thick sandy layer with abundant broken shells of Hiatella sp. and pectenoids (only a single shell was perfectly preserved, see Fig. 4). This agglomeration was formed during an open-sea incursion in the area of the Prince Charles Mountains and currently is located nearly 300km landward from the permanent ice- edge (Bolshiyanov, unpublished data).

Size class: macrofossils

Preservation: original aragonite, original calcite
