Shalamzar area, Bakhtiari succession, Bk-2 unit, grey pebbly limestone (Miocene of Iran)

Also known as Coral interval B

Where: Iran (32.1° N, 50.8° E: paleocoordinates 29.5° N, 49.1° E)

• coordinate stated in text

• outcrop-level geographic resolution

When: Bakhtiari Formation, Miocene (23.0 - 5.3 Ma)

• The precise dating of the Bakhtiari succession (within the Miocene) requires further highresolution taxonomic and biostratigraphic studies of the foraminifera and nannofossil species.

Environment/lithology: shallow subtidal; wackestone and packstone

• Within this carbonate layer biotic components include echinoid spines, mollusc fragments and benthic foraminifera are dispersed in a wackestone–packstone fabric. The coral components of the pebblebearing limestone consist of thin branching colonies. The coral growth fabrics of the faunal assemblages constitute a sparse pillarstone. The growth fabrics were poorly developed due to the sparse development of corals (ca 5% volume).
• wackestone–packstone fabric.Grey pebbly limestone with small scattered coral colonies (Coral interval B).

Size classes: macrofossils, mesofossils
