Environment/lithology: submarine fan; diatomaceous, white shale

• The material constituting this formation is hypothesized to be a mixture of several submarine fans of turbidite from the Santa Monica Mountains, deposited at depths of approximately 1000 m below sea level (Sullwold, 1960) during strike-slip activity of the basin against the San Gabriel fault approximately 12 Mya (Rumelhart and Ingersoll, 1997).
