Powys Curve (Devonian of the United States)

Where: Lycoming County, Pennsylvania (41.4° N, 77.1° W: paleocoordinates 39.6° S, 24.9° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• small collection-level geographic resolution

When: Sherman Creek Member (Catskill Formation), Devonian (419.2 - 358.9 Ma)

• The lithology of the block from which the fossil was extracted is identical to in-situ material from the road cut less than 100 meters away.

• member-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: delta plain; siltstone and fine-grained, medium sandstone

• These lithologies indicate that the Sherman Creek Member formed in a delta plain setting characterized by low gradient, high sinuosity, shallow channels near the coastline (Sevon, 1985). Root traces are abundant and suggest stable, vegetated interfluves (Harvey, 1998).
• The Sherman Creek Member is characterized by laterally persistent, several-meter-thick, fining-upward cycles of siltstones and fine to medium sandstones.
