Laguna Niguel (Miocene of the United States)

Also known as LACM localities 6906, 6902, and 3185; Aliso Creek; El Lazo Road

Where: Orange County, California (33.6° N, 117.7° W: paleocoordinates 33.1° N, 114.9° W)

• coordinate stated in text

• local area-level geographic resolution

When: Monterey Formation, Tortonian (11.6 - 7.2 Ma)

• Domning (1978) indicates this collection is latest Miocene-early Pliocene, but Barnes et al., 1985 state it is approximately 10 Ma.

•In Southern California the Monterey Formation ranges from the mid Langhian to earliest Messinian (14.9 – 7.1 Ma) [16–18]. Microfossils (diatoms and silicoflagellates) recovered from LACM Loc. 6901, a diatomaceous unit that is stratigraphically below Loc. 6902 [11], are part of the lower Thalassiosira antiqua Subzone a, which ranges from 8.5 to 7.7 Ma [18]. This gives LACM Loc. 6902 an age between 8.5 and 7.1 Ma (late Tortonian–earliest Messinian [19]) (Velez-Juarbe & Valenzuela-Toro, 2019).

•This has been clarified by Parham et al 2022 to be late Tortonian

• formation-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: basinal (); yellow sandstone and gray shale

• deep Pacific basin
• Type locality LACM 6906 "in yellow sands and laminated gray shale"

•LACM locality 6902 "in coarse yellow sand overlying laminated gray shale"

•LACM locality 3185 "in coarse yellow sand"

Size class: macrofossils

Reposited in the LACM

Collection methods: surface (float),

• Bird fossils described in this paper are LACM specimens and derive from LACM localities previously in Laguna Niguel. Associated with marine mammals.
