Delaware Water Gap Eurypterids (Silurian of the United States)

Where: Pennsylvania (41.0° N, 75.1° W: paleocoordinates 29.8° S, 43.3° W)

• coordinate based on nearby landmark

When: Shawangunk Formation, Silurian (443.4 - 419.2 Ma)

• bed-level stratigraphic resolution

Environment/lithology: marginal marine; lithified, conglomeratic sandstone and lithified, black shale

• Considered by Smith (1970) to be a proximal braided stream deposit. [GSA Bull. 81:2993-3014.]

•2003:04:06 SEP tectonic/stratigraphic information supplied on the basis of regional stratigraphic context and lithological description. Only applies if Llandoverian age is correct. Later age assignment changes context in larger sequence architecture.

• Massive, conglomeratic sandstone, with thin band of black, arenaceous shale; eurypterids in shale.

Size class: macrofossils
