Cebus apella brunneus was named by Allen (1914). It is extant. Its type specimen is AMNH 32052.
It was synonymized subjectively with Cebus olivaceus by Wilson and Reeder (2005); it was recombined as Cebus brunneus by Boubli et al. (2012).
