Spinodus was named by Dzik (1976) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-u O Cara-l Sepkoski's reference number: 1116].

It was assigned to Chirognathidae by Pyle and Barnes (2002); and to Conodontophorida by Sepkoski (2002).
